Cefmof Launches Finland's First Hydrogen Sauna Boat Project

World Region Europe

City of Jyväskylä, Finland

Toyota Mobility Foundation, the City of Jyväskylä, and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team have established Central Finland Mobility Foundation (“Cefmof”) and have been advancing activities aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and realizing a sustainable society.

We would like to introduce Cefmof’s newly launched Hydrogen Sauna Boat project, Finland’s first hydrogen-powered sauna boat. The project aims to explore new opportunities for hydrogen utilization through practical demonstrations using swappable hydrogen cartridges while making hydrogen visible as part of everyday life and recreational experiences.

The Hydrogen Sauna Boat serves as a practical pilot platform for testing hydrogen applications in waterborne transportation under real operating conditions. Hydrogen will be utilized in two ways: through a fuel cell system that generates electricity for propulsion and onboard equipment, and as a direct energy source for sauna heating and grilling. The vessel’s energy system consists of swappable hydrogen cartridges, a fuel cell system, a battery system, and electric propulsion, enabling the project to evaluate hydrogen use in locations where conventional refueling infrastructure is not available.

The project also provides an opportunity to develop, test, and evaluate new hydrogen solutions in a real operating environment while building expertise and identifying new application areas for hydrogen. Safety plays a key role throughout the project, with hydrogen detection systems, automatic safety functions, and ventilation measures integrated into the vessel’s design. The boat is currently under construction, and the first on-water tests are scheduled to take place in July 2026.
